Music & Wine

I'm a great fan of Ravel's haunting piano music, especially this Pavane. What better wine to drink it with than something quintetssentially French: a tangy, complex, south-western blend of three unusual grapes from the brilliant Plaimont co-operative in Gascony, called Le Passé Authentique?

Devastated by the death of the wonderful Patrick Sandeman this week. It's been a very sad week for everyone in the UK wine trade. As a tribute to Patrick's memory, here's the brilliant Gretchen Peters singing Heaven. Drinking a declassified Châteauneuf du Pape from Domaine Jean Royer (£12.25, Lea & Sandeman) to go with it. RIP, Patrick.

Feeling in a mellow mood today. So what better than the great South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim playing Ocean and the River with a glass of the heavenly Bellingham Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape? Let the music wash over you as you sip the wine.

I'm a huge fan of Alain Graillot's red Crozes, but the white blend, made from Marsanne and Roussanne, is every bit as delicious. I'm enjoying a glass of this while listening to the French jazzman and novelist, Boris Vian, singing Je Bois. Great lyrics, too. Systématiquement, indeed.
