Today is voting day in the US presidential election. I make no secret of the fact that I'm hoping for an Obama win. Iv'e chosen two examples of the best of America: Midlake's beautiful harmonies on Acts of Man and a bottle of Jim Clendennen's equally mellifluous Au Bon Climat Chardonnay from Santa Barbara. Fingers crossed.....

He might be from Angola, rather than Portugal, but I still love the sound of Waldemar Bastos' voice when I'm drinking a Portuguese wine. Here, I've chosen a glass of Warre's traditional style LBV to go with it, a Port with extra bottle age and complexity. The two enhance one another, adding fire to fire, mellowness to mellowness.

Paolo Conte is one of my favourite singers, the Tom Waits of Italy if you like. Even if you can't understand the words (and I struggle with them), you can't fail to enjoy the beat of Boogie. I would match this with a Negroamaro that I've just discovered at the recent Berry Brothers' tasting. Both are fun, approachable and have a spring in their steps.

Nothing better than a bottle of elegant, beautifully poised Joseph Drouhin 2010 Chorey-lès-Beaune accompanied by some mellifluous playing from the late, great French pianist, Michel Petrucciani, playing his tribute to another favourite jazzman of mine, Bill Evans. All I need is an open fire.
