Music & Wine

It's always great to catch up with winemakers who love music. I hadn't heard of jazz singer Kurt Elling until Michael Hill-Smith MW told me about him over a glass of wine. So what better match with such a great voice than the sultry, perfumed 2010 Pinot Noir (£26.50, Wine Direct) from this Adelaide Hills-based winery, the best release yet from S&S?

I'm getting ready to fly to New Zealand for a Pinot Noir Conference in a week's time, so my latest music and wine choice has a Kiwi theme. Neil Finn's Any Time doesn's sound like a very cheerful song on first listening, but I think it's an invitation to seize the day. What better way to celebrate life than with a glass of 2012 Dog Point Sauvignon, one of my favourite Marlborough whites? Two Kiwis in perfect harmony.

I've never met anyone outside Portugal who likes Madredeus (maybe I'm just mixing in the wrong circles), so I hope a mention here will inspire a few of you to give them a listen. I've matched it with one of my favourite Portuguese whites: both light and slightly ethereal with a hint of the sea about them.

I was lucky enough to hear Eric Bibb play live earlier this year. This is a wonderful recording of the great blues singer's version of Needed Time. It's so catchy (I can't stop my foot tapping) that I want to match it with a glass of something really joyful and quaffable, like the ultra reliable Vega Ariana Rioja from Waitrose.
