Music & Wine

My friend and fellow wine writer Max Allen introduced me to the music of Donny Hathaway on a drive from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley. Not sure how I'd managed to miss out on his solo career. So sticking with the Yarra theme, I've been listening to this while drinking a bottle of the refined 2011 Mac Forbes Coldstream Pinot Noir from Waitrose. Max and Mac, thanks for a great day.

I don't hold out much hope for England's chances at this year's World Cup, but at least we can enjoy the atmosphere from the this side of the Atlantic. To get you in the mood, how about a bit of classic Brazilian music with a bottle of fizz from Miolo, one of the country's best producers? The Coconova Brut is available from Marks & Spencer at £8.99.

I was lucky enough to see Bruce Springsteen on the first night of my recent visit to South Africa. It was the first time the Boss had played in the country in years and a great, high-octane gig. This the title track from his new album. What better to drink with it than a glass of 2011 Botanica Chenin Blanc (£14.95, The Wine Society), an amazing old vine white from a vineyard in Citrusdal, with subtle oak and pithy minerality. It's made by an American, too.

Kind of Blue was the first jazz album I ever bought and I still love it. This is one of my favourite tracks on the album, with a piano-driven rhythm that makes me want to tap my feet and reach for a glass of something delicious. How about a bottle of 2010 Domaine Vadoisey Pommard (£26.95, Roberson Wine), a fine, great value red Burgundy that shows the lightness of touch of a Volnay rather than the surly power of a Pommard?
